MTR is a radically destructive form of surface mining. Coal companies bulldoze the forest on top of a mountain, decapitate the peaks with explosives, shove the shattered rubble into adjacent valleys and destroy the head- water streams and communities. It takes as few as 12 men to destroy a mountain.

Kayford Mountain, Cabin Creek, WV. has largely been destroyed by MTR - 7,500 acres of what used to be a forested and towering mountain range. The blue/green color in the foreground is hydro seed, a chemical that is used to replace the pre-exiting topsoil.

Contaminated water samples

Slurry Impoundment (After the coal is washed what is left is a slurry of contamination). These dams have broken with disasterous consequences on communities below.

Family Cemeteries on top of MTR sites. Families can not go to their relative's graves without special permission from the coal companies and a police escort.

Twisted Gun Golf Course, Wharncliff, West Virginia. This course was built on an MTR site. This is what reclamation looks like. (visit: Ohvec.org)
